Senior Issues - Age and Fitness
By the year 2030, it’s estimated that one in five drivers in the United States will be 65 or older. The California DMV will be looking at seniors for changes in their vision, flexibility, strength, and other physical and mental characteristics that may affect your ability to drive.
Does the DMV automatically reexamine drivers after they reach a certain age? They’ll tell you that your age alone is not sufficient basis for a reexamination. However, they do have the authority to investigate and reexamine every driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle safely due to a physical or mental condition, or a poor driving record.
The California DMV claims one of their major responsibilities is to promote traffic safety and to protect the motoring public by minimizing the number of unsafe drivers. They claim to understand that a driver’s license is a senior citizen’s ticket to independence, and that they keep this mind when evaluating a senior’s ability to drive.
The DMV considers your health when evaluating your ability to drive an automobile. You must be able to see well enough to detect hazards in different types of lighting situations, judge distances, and adjust your speed to the prevailing speed of traffic, and read road signs. Your brain must be alert enough to quickly decide the correct course of action in any type of traffic situation, including unexpected ones. They evaluate your ability to respond and react in these unexpected situations.
The DMV will evaluate your physical and mental abilities. However, getting older doesn’t automatically make you a bad driver. Most of us will continue to be safe drivers well into retirement. You have control over lifestyle choices that may affect your health. You decide what and when you eat, how much and what kind of exercise you get, how you handle stress.
As you know, physical activity and regular exercise help your mind, body and soul to remain healthy, as well as improving your health, strength, flexibility and sharpening your reflexes.
Proper nutrition helps you maintain good health and provides you with energy needed for daily activities and safe driving. It’s easy to overlook the warning signs of poor nutritional health as we get older, so you should always consult your physician before making any dietary or nutritional changes.
If you suffer from a lack of appetite, you should consult your physician. Loss of appetite can be an indication of an illness, or the side effect of medication. Either of these can be considered by the DMV when evaluating your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
As we get older, we notice changes in our physical abilities and flexibility. Can you still turn your head to look over your shoulder while backing up or changing lanes? Have you started to notice weakness in your arms or legs while driving? Keeping in shape and maintaining flexibility is essential.
To maintain strength and flexibility you don’t have to do strenuous exercises, join a gym or spend a lot of money. Using light weights at home is an ideal way to help keep in shape. You can use things you already have such as soup or vegetable cans, or water bottles as weights. You can squeeze small stuffed toys or balls to help strengthen your hands and arms. Staying active is the key to staying in shape, no matter what your age.
Walking, dancing lifting weights, household chores, shopping and gardening are all great ways to stay in shape. Whatever you do, don’t over do. Do only what you’re comfortable with. Exercise is good for your overall health and well being.
